Bitcoin developers are removing the replace-by-fee signaling flag from wallet software because the full-RBF policy is now standard across the network, making the old opt-in marker redundant. The change addresses a privacy concern: the legacy RBF signal creates an on-chain fingerprint that reveals which wallet software was used to send a transaction. According to developer rkrux on the developer-mailing list, the intention is to remove BIP 125 RBF signaling from Bitcoin Core wallet transactions. Because full-RBF became standard policy, every transaction is now treated as replaceable regardless of explicit signaling, rendering the old flag obsolete.
The implementation requires coordination because if different wallets remove the signal in different ways, transactions will remain distinguishable on-chain and trackable. Community participant Murch explained that the signal is not a simple delete — it is a mandatory field that must be filled with a value. Wallets cannot leave it blank; they must pick a sequence number for every input. Murch noted that approximately 75 percent of transactions already use one specific code, mostly MAX-2, and that wallets should converge on this dominant standard rather than introduce new distinct patterns. Developer rkrux stated that the default input sequence number should be the one agreed on by the wider wallet community as best practice. The goal is camouflage: making transactions from different wallets look similar and harder to track.
This is a privacy improvement for the Bitcoin protocol, not a market event. The change does not alter transaction throughput, fee economics, or network security guarantees — it removes a fingerprinting vector that made wallet software identifiable on-chain. For traders, this has no direct transmission to BTC price action.
