Metaplanet purchased an additional 2,823 BTC for $170.7 million, expanding its treasury to 43,000 BTC worth $2.6 billion. The Tokyo-listed firm now ranks as the world's third largest publicly traded bitcoin holder behind Strategy (MSTR) and Twenty One Capital (XXI), per Bitcoin Treasuries. The company's shares closed 3.5 percent higher at 207 yen following the announcement. Alongside the purchase, Metaplanet reported its Bitcoin Income Generation business generated 1.75 billion yen ($10.85 million) in Q2 revenue, bringing first-half FY2026 revenue to 4.72 billion yen. The division uses bitcoin options to generate recurring income while building the treasury. Trailing twelve-month revenue reached approximately 11.4 billion yen.
This matters because it confirms that corporate conviction buyers remain active even at current price levels. The dual strategy of accumulating spot bitcoin while generating cash flow from options income separates Metaplanet from pure treasury holders — it suggests a sustainable business model around bitcoin, not just a balance sheet bet. The revenue figures indicate the income generation strategy is working at scale. That operational cash flow may fund further accumulation without diluting equity holders, a difference from firms that must continuously raise capital to buy more bitcoin.
For traders, this reinforces that long-term holders are still building positions, but it does not create a near-term directional setup. The purchase was announced after it occurred, meaning the buying pressure is already absorbed. The stock's 3.5 percent move is isolated to Metaplanet equity and does not transmit to BTC spot — corporate buys of this size rarely move the broader market unless they are surprise announcements from a first-time buyer or represent an acceleration in buying cadence. This is neither. Funding sits at +0.6 basis points per eight hours, three times the 30-day average of +0.2bp, indicating leveraged longs are already positioned and paying to stay in the trade. Extreme fear at 19, marginally above the 30-day average of 15, suggests retail capitulation is ongoing but not deepening.
Watch for any acceleration in Metaplanet's buying cadence or a similar announcement from Strategy or Twenty One Capital. If one of the top three holders begins buying at an accelerated pace, that could signal a shift in conviction. For now, this is confirmation of existing behavior, not a catalyst for new positioning.
