Moody's assigned Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin an A2 long-term deposit rating and a P-1 short-term deposit rating, covering native tokens on both XRP Ledger and Ethereum. According to Moody's, the ratings reflect reserve safeguards in place against issuer bankruptcy exposure for holders.

The A2 rating places RLUSD in upper-medium grade territory, six notches below Moody's highest Aaa rating but above the Baa3 threshold that separates investment-grade from junk. The P-1 short-term rating is Moody's highest designation for instruments maturing within thirteen months. The ratings suggest Moody's views RLUSD's reserve structure as comparable to mid-tier corporate debt, with bankruptcy risk acknowledged but deemed sufficiently mitigated by structural protections. This represents an institutional signal: stablecoins are now being assessed within formal rating frameworks.

For traders, this opens the door for institutional capital flows that require rated assets. Pension funds, insurance companies, and structured products often operate under mandates that restrict holdings to investment-grade rated instruments. RLUSD now clears that hurdle. This does not necessarily mean RLUSD will capture market share immediately—network effects and liquidity remain important factors—but it removes a potential friction point that has kept certain institutional buyers out of stablecoin markets. XRP may see derivative demand as traders position for increased on-chain activity if RLUSD adoption accelerates among rated-mandate funds.

The specific thing to watch is whether Moody's follows with ratings for other stablecoins. If competitors pursue similar ratings and receive comparable grades, RLUSD's advantage could narrow to a temporary first-mover window. If they do not, or if they receive lower ratings, RLUSD becomes the only stablecoin accessible to a meaningful subset of institutional allocators, and that flow could be sustained. Monitor stablecoin supply growth on-chain and any public statements on rating engagement over the next quarter.
