The Moscow Exchange will list spot bitcoin and Tether's USDT for trading in December, according to CoinDesk. The exchange has been under U.S. sanctions since June 2024 and stopped dollar and euro trading following its designation.

The listing creates no new transmission to BTC or USDT pricing. The exchange has been cut off from Western clearing since mid-2024, limiting its user base to domestic Russian accounts and any remaining correspondent relationships in non-sanctioned jurisdictions. USDT already trades on offshore exchanges accessible to Russian counterparties. This listing formalises access that exists through other channels rather than unlocking a new buyer base.

Volume from a sanctioned venue with no Western clearing access will be a rounding error against global venues that set the marginal price. The announcement disclosed no trading volume forecasts, regulatory approvals, or custody arrangements. Material impact would require pre-launch demand commitments, custodial partnerships indicating institutional uptake, or Russian regulatory clarity around crypto custody suggesting a broader policy shift. Any such signal would take weeks to months, not days.
